Casual shift cancelled after arrival

I work as a casual educator and recently arrived at a centre for a booked shift, only to be told they no longer needed me because the staff-to-child ratio had changed that morning. I wasn't offered any minimum payment for the time I spent travelling or waiting. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a common policy that centres follow for cancelled casual shifts after you've already arrived, or does it depend entirely on the employer? I'd love to hear how other casual educators have handled this situation.
