A number is a count or measurement. We write or talk about numbers using numerals such as "2", "8" or "23". So, numeral is a symbol for number. Each number has an English name such as "twelve". A digit is a single character that we use to represent a number. We usually use 10 digits to represent numbers. Example: The numeral 153 is made up of 3 digits ("1", "5" and "3").

By learning the numbers, children can understand how number system works, how numbers relate to each other and make calculation easier. It gives them the confidence to be flexible in their approach to solving problems. The main step is to teach kids how to identify the first ten numerals (0 through 9), teaching them the sounds of numbers in English and also how to write the numbers.
