Free Flow Routine

Hi Everyone,

Just a question for those who work at centres or know centres that are making use of a free flow Indoor outdoor routine. By this I mean my boss next year wants to try and have a free flowing routine between our two youngest rooms (2-3 and 3-4 year olds) and the indoor and outdoor spaces. So say at Free learning time in the morning the children can go between indoor and outdoors as they please. Currently, the two younger rooms are sharing one big room but have a rotating roster for the routine (E.g 9am - 11am - is Indoor 3-4 year olds time, while the 2-3 year olds are outdoors).

My Director and I have been a bit iffy of the rules of how to execute this, for example what happens to ratios if we are to implement this? We are only a small centre of 29 children a day BUT as of next year we will also only have 4 staff a day. Meaning we would be able to have 1 teacher with say the children outdoors, one with the children indoors and the last with the 4-5 year olds (in their own separate room) while having one off the floor (If our ratios will allow).

So any insight into how your centre or a centre you know of and how it works for them would be great :)

I personally love the idea, it feels a bit more inclusive, I am just skeptical as to how you explain the benefits to an assessor.

Thanks in advance!

Please read the following "Understanding Educator To Child Ratios" which may help you determine the best way to go about a free flow program:
