Non-babbling in 10 month old

Hi
I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have a 10 month old girl who does not babble at all. She says "ah", squeals and grunts but is unable (or unwilling) to produce any consonant based sounds. She does not imitate the opening and closing of my mouth. She has had her hearing checked - AOK. I have taken her to our GP who was unconcerned. She is ok in other areas. She sort of rolls over, does not crawl but can walk while holding my hand. She is bright and alert. Looks when you point something out and is very social. I don't know whether to push the issue with my GP. She is my first child and perhaps I am being a tad paranoid. Any advice would be welcome.

Hi billigirl71,
First of all it is fine if you're concerned that your 10 month old girl does not babble at all. Normally speaking, the babbling starts at around six months for alot of babies.
I am currently working in the toddler room and the language development for my group of children range from most of my kids being able to talk clearly, however there is a 3 yr old child, who was yet to say more than only a few words. Like in your case, this 3 yr old child does show typically appropriate development in all other areas except language. They are able to understand what is being said to them and was responding through actions and one word responses. However, this child was yet to begin to speak more than 1 word at a time, most toddlers would be able to speak in short sentences, typically for their age. At the beginning the parents had discussed their concerns of what the next step should be and whether or not to investigate the underlying issue. But in the best interest of the child, the parents decided to wait a little longer to see what happens. Well, 5 months later the improvement that this child has shown is great. The child has began speaking in sentences and even though at times, there are a few language and speech errors, the child is beginning to pick up on their language development at their own pace. This is my experience on how language development differs for each child..
My best advice to you at this stage is, that if your concerned have a chat with a pediatrician rather than your gp.

thank u. It is reassuring to hear it from someone who knows. I am unsure if I can get to see a pediatrician without a referral. Will look into it and keep u posted.

Dear Bili you do not to worry at all. Your child is growing up properly in all other areas. It is not necessary that all children sohw a good growing in all areas. Some times it does not happened at one stage but with the passage of time it becomes normal. so wait a few years and hope for the best

Your such a loving mom with your daughter! Maybe she still adjusts and eventually will improve on those areas. Child has different maturity in all phases of life, just enjoy her company always! Some people just completely insist on having these things referred to as “kids” and one of the big things a father or mother has to give is child care during infancy and early childhood. It's not exactly inexpensive either, as child care costs have been accelerating away for a while.
