II. Outline the responsibilites for each of the following staff member during a fire evacuation:

Case Scenario 2

You notice several children become upset and anxious, due to the evacuation process, and the sound of the alarm ringing continuously. Gemma, who has recently started her traineeship at your centre appears frazzled and confused
I. How would you respond to the emotional needs of the children?


What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?

Cert III Trained
• Follow the direction of the room leader in the event of an evacuation
• Help assist in the evacuation of the children, staff and any visitors
• Follow all directions of the room leader

Room Leader
• Organize a quick and orderly evacuation of the children, staff and visitors in their room
• Check all areas of the rooms are empty, closing all doors and windows as you vacate the building
• Ensure that they have collected the roll and any medication for children in their room
• Notify director of numbers of children and staff after the attendance roll has been marked
Director / Supervisor
• Call the (000) Fire brigade
• Close the doors and windows of the office and foyer
• If safe and time permitting, conduct a search of all rooms to ensure that everyone has vacated.
• Collect staff and visitor sign in sheets
• Take mobile phone to assembly point
• Check number of children and staff in attendance and inform parents of the emergency.
• Follow the directions of the fire brigade upon arrival

Case Study
I.

It is important that during an evacuation the children feel safe and secure, this can be achieved by the staff taking control of the situation in a confident manner.
It is important that the children have an understanding of the situation and that they are provided with opportunities to express how they feel.
Once the children have been evacuated, it is essential that all staff members reassure the children that they are safe and that the emergency services are dealing with the situation. Some children may be frightened and staff should try to ease their worries as it could lead to more children being frightened.

It sounds like you have included everything in your response... the only other points I can think of are:

1) The director/room leader should give the trainee a copy of the evacuation policy (at the beginning of her employment) and her responsibilities so she doesn't become confused during this procedure.

2) Room leaders should constantly discuss emergency evacuation procedures with the children to remind them of what is to happen during the event of one. This should provide children with enough confidence and support to know what is happening and what to expect during the evacuation process.
