Case Study Two: Background: You have been given the role of acting as supervisor whilst the Nominated Supervisor is away on bereavement leave. You have been monitoring the staff while the children have been playing outside and found that the Kindy assistant has been standing with her back to the children and occasionally leaving the area without informing others, leaving staff ratios too low to meet requirements. You have spoken to the licensee regarding this issue and they would like you to talk to her. Guidance: You must answer the questions below using the Sparkling Stars Grievance Procedures for staff as a guideline of how to approach this issue. http://www.inspireeducation.net.au/netw ... res-staff/ 2. Describe what you would discuss with the Kindy Assistant in order for them to meet centre requirements in their performance? If staff performance is unsatisfactory, provide counselling and support to improve performance.

I would discuss her anticipated roles , responsibilities and obligations at the centre as she is not competent as far as a rigid outside supervision of children is concerned. As she is a new employee, she feels relaxed or it must have been a cultural thing and never brought to attention in her previous job.
Nevertheless, she will be reminded about the paramount safety of children in her care and the consequences for not fulfilling the roles. If she needs to leave her duty due to some emergency, she should inform other staff members present there.Due to staff shortage, leaving area ocassionally would also create more burden and pressure on others.
Through appropriate counselling and support, she should do well. Her duty of care and safety in play field needs to be really emphasised as any incident could lead both her and the centre in trouble.
The performance appraisle will follow to monitor the duty performance. Once rigid observation techniques are in place , periodic opportunity will be there to monitor the changes in attitudes of this particular staff member.

Please help as I have to redo and the assessor is asking culture should not be an excuse.

Thanks

Kindy assistant has been standing with her back to the children and occasionally leaving the area without informing others, leaving staff ratios too low to meet requirements.
Rather you could give her some strategies for effective supervision outside in the playground. Give the assistant a copy of the outdooe suprvision plan. discuss with her that when she comes insdie that she has to let others know so they are aware...
