HKTHIR403B - Brochure Based On Diversity In The Workplace

Your Assignment Module Number and Heading: HKTHIR403B Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
Your Assignment Type: Other
Currently Working in Childcare? Yes
Your knowledge: Basic Knowledge

Your Question?
I am required to develop a handout/brochure based on cultural diversity in the workplace to be given to all staff. I need to include the following info:
1. Workplace practices that all staff must implement to promote a culturally and psychologically safe environment
2. Where staff can seek assistance if they feel discriminated against
3. Contact details for an interpreter service

What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
1. A lot of what I have covered in this topic talks about not using language that stereotypes or shows bias eg ridiculous statements like: "I though Italians only ate pasta!" or "aren't all migrants refugees?".
I'm struggling to make a list that is constructive and in simple point form that will work on a hand out.
I found a great picture of a whole lot of different fish swimming in the one tank and I thought I could have a bubble for each one that makes a statement of a workplace practice to support a culturally safe environment. I could also use a tree and each work practice is on a different leaf with Cultural Diversity written on the trunk

Could the workplace practice points be:
* We respect and enjoy each other's differences
* We are not all born the same but we are equal
* We undertake regular training for cultural awareness with our staff and clients
* We respect each other's values
" We ask questions instead of making assumptions about each other's background
The problem is, I think these sound more like slogans than workplace practices for staff to implement, so I'm not sure if I've missed the target

2. I believe the first point of reference is the grievance procedure in the work place which is run through the centre Manager or Director. After this if there is no resolution they can refer to the Fairwork Ombudsman - contact details will be included, and a contact for the Childcare Union, also Bicultural Support Program unit http://www.eccfcsc.org

3. I will include the contact details for a local language interpreter service and also a cultural interpreter service
http://www.naati.com.au 02 9 267 1357 & http://www.immi.gov.au/tis 13 14 50

It's really question 1 that I am most stuck on. I can see the layout in my head but listing the workplace practices is my stumbling block

Hope someone can help me stitch this up.
Thanks
Mazza

HI everyone,
I noticed I've got quite a few views on my post. I hope my answers to 2 & 3 have been helpful to someone doing this unit.
I posted on Thursday and was hoping by now, someone might have had a chance to contribute or make some suggestions on what I had written for Part 1: Workplace practices that all staff must implement to promote a culturally and psychologically safe environment.
Any ideas on whether my list meets the "workplaces practices" or if I'm completely off target, would really be appreciated - it's the last task in this unit which feels like it's taking forever to get through!

Help!
Mazza

Hi Mazza
I am not doing any assignments (so maybe way off target here) but as a Kindy teacher I know that all workplaces (not just daycares & schools) have to abide by anti-discrimination laws. Go to humanrights.gov.au it covers racial discrimination and tells you what you cannot do. Just re-word this to show what all staff must do. Also covers disability, gender, age discrimination etc.
Good luck
Hope this helps
