Scenario
You are a child care worker who has been involved in reporting severe verbal, and mild physical abuse of two children, who are in your centre, by their father. The children have been in the care of their father since their mother died a year ago. Emma is 4 and Ben is 10.
4(a). Describe 3 child-focused work practices or techniques that you might use to gather information from Emma and Ben?
(i)Talk to the children in a place where they are comfortable and feel safe, let both Emma and Ben know that you believe them and that it is not their fault. Explain that you can help to make the abuse stop. Once you've finished talking ensure to thank them for talking to you and your pleased they told you what's happening.
(ii) Use non-leading question during your conversations, questions such as what foods did you eat yesterday? Do you want to tell me who did that? Do you want to tell me about your home? are all non-leading questions which the child can decide if he feels comfortable answering rather than if he was directly asked about the situation he would most likely close down and not say anything about it.
(iii)If they are shy about talking about the issues, try to see if they would rather draw a picture to explain what happened.
4(b). Script what you would say separately to Emma and Ben, demonstrating child-directed communication that is developmentally appropriate for each of the children and that supports them to participate in decision-making.
Write this as dialogue, using full sentences, as you would say this to each child.
(i) What you would say to Emma (age 4)
(ii) What you would say to Ben (age 10)
I'm struggling with what I would say to each child, Any help would be appreciated!!
