Scenario
The following scenario documents concerns about an employee’s punctuality and is written in a subjective and unprofessional manner. Read the scenario and answer the related questions.
The Trouble with Carna!
03/06/14: Carna late again – does this person own a watch????
04/06/14: Carna arrived 15 mins late saying she couldn’t start her car – does she think I was born yesterday?
05/06/14: Carna actually arrived on time – a miracle!
06/06/14: Carna arrived on time again today, but she was in a very bad mood.
07/06/14: Carna 5 minutes late – I knew it wouldn’t last – a leopard never changes its spots!
Action: Give Carna a written warning that if she continues to be late she will be given notice to terminate.

Q - Rewrite the document so that the information is recorded in an objective and professional manner.
Answer - 03/06/14: Carna arrives late to work again
04/06/14: Carna is late to work by 15 minutes. Reason for her late arrival was because her car didn’t start
05/06/14: Carna arrived on time to work and started her shift
06/06/14: Carna arrived on time to work but was a little upset
07/06/14: Carna was late again to start her shift by 5 minutes.

Q - Describe how you would address this issue with the employee.
Answer - The employee should be called in for a formal meeting. It should be conducted where it is private. She can be given an opportunity to explain the reason for her late arrival on a daily basis. The director can enquire if she needs a change in the shift and if she needs her roster to be changed. The director can do it if possible and if it doesn’t affect for the smooth run of the service. Where the roster cannot be changed, the employee should be made to understand the reason why a roster is made, and the need for the staff to start on time and to comply with the children and staff ratio. She should be given a final warning but be given an opportunity to arrive on time and perform well at the service.

Q - With consideration to regulations and impact on service operations, why is it important for a manager to address this issue with Carna?
It is important for the manager to address this issue with Carna as the staff should be punctual and on time to work. There is a need to comply with the staff and children ratio and maintain the ratio. Where the staff arrives late it might be difficult to run the service smoothly. Children would have separation anxiety when the parents drop them off and the staffs need to be present for caring for the children. Where the employee is late often and no action is taken against it, other staff members may not be serious about the service and may not arrive on time.

Thank you in advance
