Assessment 2 Case Study

Four year old Omar is starting at your service in two weeks time. During your enrolment meeting with him and his family you recognised that:
* Omar had difficulty engaging with you and with his family
* Omar did not make eye contact
* Omar didn't respond to his name
* Omar repeated phrases that you said to him, for example "Are you excited to start at preschool Omar" he replied "Excited for preschool Omar"
* When in the room with the other children Omar wasn't interested in the children around him even as they approached him to say hello

Omar's parents also disclose to you that he has difficulty making new friends and often appears to be in his own world. They state that he often resists physical contact from others and spends a lot of his time focused on his toy cars, lining them up in rows.

Part A

1) Using your current knowledge of child development, what do you believe Omar's additional need may be? (Justify your response with researched information)
> Using my current knowledge of child development that I believed that Omar's showing sign of additional need of Autism. There were signs that suggest Omar had difficulty engaging with the carer and with his family, he did not make eye contact, didn't respond to his name etc. They state that he often resisted physical contact from others and spends a lot of time focused on his toy cars, lining up in a row.

2) Who would you consult to assist you in this determination?
> I would consult with my supervisor/director, room leader and maybe the other staff member if you are not sure about the situation and they would support me to determine with this situation.

3) What types observation methods would be the most appropriate to use in determining this additional needs?
> Observation methods would be the most appropriate to use in determining this additional needs would be: Ancedotal, Social/Emotional and Time Sample.

4) Prior to Omar starting, what adaptations will your service need to implement to cater to Omar's needs? Include adaptations to both the service and equipments.
> The service will cater Omar's needs to suit his learning developments, physical, emotional/social, language and cognitive skills etc. He will need 1:1 support staff member to work with him on his own pace in a quiet room for example, an area that Omar will feel comfortable and secure.
> The service will treat each child as an individual and will support his own additional needs
> The service will organised a support staff member to work with Omar 1:1, and to involve on his learning development to extend his language and social skills etc. The centre will need suitable equipments that suitable for Omar to use it in a safe manner environment.

5) Detail how you will support Omar's entry into the service?

> Make him feel welcome and introduce each staff members
> Make everything feels as comfortable as possible in the environment

6) How will you ensure you communication is culturally appropriate?

> Verbal communications with staff members (in the morning/afternoon shift)
> Communication book and speak professional at all times
> Staff meeting to review all the informations
> Newsletter

7) Using the case study and your knowledge of Omar's additional needs, develop a plan for the tradition of Omar into your service. Your plan must include the following:
a) A time line of transition activities for Omar and his family that includes lead up visits and meeting with other professionals. (PS having troubling answer this question please help!!!

b) A list of organisation that would be useful to assist Omar

Hi Tracie,

Your responses are great!

Just wanted to make one point with PART A - Q1) I think you need to add more specific information regarding to autism.

You can refer to the following as well as use the evidence within the scenario:

Autism

I think the rest of your responses are well thought out and detailed! All good!
