Your Question?
Hi, first of all thank you for having this site that will guide and help us in our studies. I have an assignment and don't know what should be the right answers.

Tyler is a four year old outgoing child who is playing with the dress ups in home corner with 2 other children, Sasha and Mia.
You notice that Tyler appears pale and lethargic. You ask Tyler how she is feeling today and she tells you that the back of her head and neck hurt. As you tentatively explore her neck and head with your fingers you notice that the glands are swollen, particularly behind her ears.
An hour passes. A rash of pink isolated spots begins to appear on Tyler’s face. At this point you suspect that she has measles or rubella.

1. Describe what you would do in this situation?

2. Who would you notify in relation to Tyler’s ill health? Why?

3. What would you do to minimise the risk of infection to other children and staff? (Ensure that you describe hygiene and infection control guidelines).

4. If the doctor confirms that Tyler has contracted measles, what are the exclusion guidelines for this illness pertaining to children/staff and especially those who aren’t immunised?

5. If the parent cannot pick up the child immediately what is your service’s next procedure?

What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
These are my answers and I know these need improvement and more info, did a research but it wasn't enough.

1. Bring her to a separate room where she can rest and feel relax. Check her temperature and let the other educator to have a look of the rashes.

2. Inform the Centre Director, it is a senstitive situation.

3. Exclude Tyler from other children. After taking her a temperature, wash my hands before attending the other children.

4. Follow the length of time according to the policy that she needs to be excluded or away from the centre. Before she goes back to the centre, ask Doctor's certificate. Explain to the parents the policy so that the other children will be safe from the risk of getting the same sickness especially to those who are not immunised.

5. Let Tyler stay in a separate room that no other children can access. Let she feel safe and comfortable. If possible one educator will stay with her so that she won't be feel alone and someone will observe her condition.

Hi, first of all thank you for having this site that will guide and help us in our studies.

That's really sweet. It's our pleasure to support and guide you through your studies! I know that sometimes you just need a push in the right direction...

With your responses, it's the right way to treat a common illness with a child from the centre. However because in this scenario it could be measles or rubella it's a more severe illness and the correct procedures need to be followed. So, for:

Q1) Isolate child. Comfort child. Check temperature and record, note down all symptoms the sick child has displayed. Remove children from the room into another area. Inform director. Inform parents. Director to check immunization records of all children at the centre to make sure all children have been vaccinated.

Q2) http://www.health.qld.gov.au/publicheal ... otifiable/

Q3) Room needs to be disinfected and cleaned before enabling children to go into the room again. This includes any activities that the sick child may have been in contact with. All children should immediately wash their hands.

Measles is spread by breathing infected airborne droplets caused by coughing and sneezing, and by contact with hands, tissues and other articles soiled by nose and throat discharges. The virus is very infectious and droplets in the air may infect people entering a room for at least 30 minutes after an infected person has left it.

Q4) http://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/wps/wcm/c ... es/measles

Q5) Contact another authorised person from the enrolment records as the child needs to be taken to the doctor immediately.

Hope thos helps,

:geek:,
