You are required to answer the following questions:
1. Developing the policy
a) Why is it important to have a sustainability policy in an early education service?

Providing opportunities for children to play in the outdoors and engage with the natural environment are an important part of an early childhood sustainability program. Sustainability education underpins everything that happens in the day-to-day running of an early childhood service, and must be implemented as part of the ongoing education in the centre, rather than isolated activities. In addition to this, a sustainability policy in an early education service provides hands-n experience and relevant education learning, which enables children to explore and learn about their local environment, as well as the issues that affect its prosperity. Such a policy also allows children to develop creativity and critical thinking skills that are necessary to make informed decisions for change, along with improving the quality of their lives and those of future generations.

b) Download a sustainability policy from any organisation (for example Community childcare cooperative) and review it.

c) What are the key areas covered?

d) How does the policy link to sustainability legislation, regulations and codes of practice

e) Why is it important to promote the policy with key stakeholders (for example parents and community members)?

For a sustainability education to be most effective, it must be developed collaboratively so that all stakeholders may benefit from the sharing of knowledge, ideas, enthusiasm, and available resources. It is extremely important that these ideas, concerns and insights are part of the policy dialogue

f) How does the policy reduce the environmental impact of toxic material, hazardous chemical use and waste?

Environmental education allows children to learn about the environment and how natural systems function; as well as the interconnectedness of plants, animals, humans, and the planet we inhabit. Thus, education regarding the impacts of such toxic and hazardous materials will convey the potential damage it may have on the environment in which they inhabit. A strong focus on maintaining and preserving the environment we live in for future generations may resonate strongly with children as they want their children and grandchildren to experience nature as they have. A sustainability policy also enables children to engage in discussions regarding sustainable practices, which in turn, encourages them to participate in recycling programs and initiatives whereby they understand recycling strategies and practices. General awareness regarding the cause and effects of climate change, along with the need to adopt environmentally sustainable practices can essentially reduce the impact of such toxic material, hazardous chemical use and waste. Such a policy can encourage environmental education to become a daily practice, rather than a mere subject.

2. Communicating with others about the policy
a) How would you promote the sustainability policy to the service stakeholders?

Families can be informed about the sustainability policy and the implementation of environmentally sustainability practices by:
• Displaying information that outline service policies, practices and its philosophy regarding the sustainability policy and associated practices.
• Using service newsletters to inform families.
• Inviting families to participate in sustainable practices at the centre.
Social media is an increasingly important way to engage with stakeholders in a more timely manner.

You can finish this off haha. I don’t know what appropriate methods are used for childcare

b) Why is it important to communicate to staff how to implement sustainable practices in the service?

Educators and staff ultimately have a responsibility to make sustainable education a part of everyday practices. As it needs to be embedded within the curriculum, staff need to be active participants in sustainability practices in order to implement the practices in the service. Thus, it is crucial that staff are able to access the necessary resources, education and support to enable them to effectively and appropriately implement a sustainability program and adhere to the policy created.

3. Implement the policy
a) What strategies will you use to make sure staff can implement the policy effectively?

4. Monitor and review the policy
a) How will the organisation know if these strategies are effective?

b) Why is it important for an organisation to review their sustainability policy?

c) How will you monitor the success or areas for improvement of the sustainability policy?

d) How will you give stakeholders feedback on the effectiveness of the policy?

a) Make links to the National Quality Standards\elements 3.3.1, 3.3.2, 6.1.2

b) Use information from Climbing the Little Green Steps (see Resources above) to improve the policy

c) Identify strategies to introduce a recycling program in the service.

d) Who will be responsible for implementing these strategies?

e) How will you document the outcomes with the service community?

f) Identify the costs associated with these strategies?

g) What barriers will you need to overcome in order to complete the project?

h) What timeframe would be appropriate for the implementation of this recycling program
