I can't see why you would have a problem with it to be honest, and I think it's great to see many positive feedback as well. I remember when I first started at TAFE people would see guys in class full of adult woman (mind you-not like were back in highschool or anything) 'What are they doing here..' and I'll just look at them and think really, the same reason were all here... for the best interest of the children but I've think we've come along way from then :) I noticed that even in these classes it's a little more accepting these days

Hi all

I was the person who started this post all that time ago and I'm so glad it's got all this attention. Previously I posted I was worried I wasn't going to get an opportunity to move up but as we speak I am acting director running a 90 place centre. I have a new found respect for directors. All I can say is I didn't think I would manage to get this far but I managed to and I haven't had anyone say anything negative to me after all these years. Don't know what's next but can't wait to find out.

Congratulations to both of you guys! I've been curious about whether the number of male early childhood educators is increasing or decreasing for a long time, but finding reliable and up to date statistics has been harder than I thought.

Hi Luke,
When I joined this service we had only couple of male in few of our all centres. But now there are plenty of males in our company but still at least 2 in each centre but still low numbers compare to female staff. ☺☺☺

As for working with other males in the past. My first ever centre there was one other male my age, 20 at the time, who was there a few days a week as was I. After that I moved centres and I was the token male, soon after that I moved to a third centre where there was another male but he was casual a few days a week. Its a shame that I have never worked with another male full time throughout my career.

As per my research you can have 1 male per centre and it is good to hear that male are so much interested about this good work.

One more shame full experience by childcare staff.
As I mentioned that I am male educator. I was responding on job advertisement of Rainbow Village Childcare, Harrispark 2150. I made a call to the given number for general enquiry about position role. The female staff replied me stariaght away "we dont need male" without asking my qualificationsns, experience and knowledge. What a disappointment for me. I have completed diploma in childcare and want to study bachelor in it but I dont see future. In center philosophy they claim that they provide diversity in staff. I think they dont know definition of diversity and EEO. I wish I could complain about these kind of childcares where sex discrimination happens to the staff before job.

Hey Jeremy,

I completely understand that in a lot of instances having males in childcare can mean having to be much more careful, but the positives way outweigh the negative. I think it's great having both females and males around to bring up children and I know I personally would rather send my child to a centre with both female and male employees than only female.
I started at a really large centre and the ratio of male to female workers was 2:1 which I don't believe is that common but it was lovely. I'm now at a much tinier centre with only 4 employees and two of them are male.

So far from my experiences there are a lot of males in the industry, however I believe it would be quite a female dominated industry.
Congratulations on smashing through your diploma so quickly, you're obviously very passionate and at the end of the day that is all that matters. If any centre were to turn you down purely due to your gender then its definitely their loss. Employing people from a range of genders, cultures, religions etc. will only help a centre as the children will definitely receive a more holistic education.

Very useful post....male educators need more support, and parents need to know the truth about what happens at daycares
( where their child may spend up to 50 hours per week ! )

I have been a male educator for over a decade, the parents are very accepting, and the kids just love me
( mainly because I treat them well, respect them, listen to them, and they feel very secure with me)

but there are too many bitchy females in this field, partly because the females have so much power,
they can get away with emotionally abusive behaviour that a man would get sacked for

It is sooo emotionally healthy for children to have both genders in their lives,
and no,
male staff don't just rough house with the kids,
we are not that one dimensional,
we can meet all the needs of young children,
just like a good husband and father can !

If you have a male worker at your daycare,
give them all your support,
if they have made it through their courses,
( obviously while under greater scrutiny than females ! )
they are likely good as gold for your child

Hi Jeremy,
Ive been working in childcare for almost two years and I've been lucky to work with four different males in two different childcare settings. Its always great having a male in the centers as it helps the young boys who may not have a male role model figure out what they want to be. It also helps in the sense that sometimes boys in the older rooms don't always want to talk to the feamale educators and would much rather have a chat with the male educator.
Many people believe that childcare is a female only industry but this isn't true childcares work well when there is a mix of both male and female educators.

I have been in the industry for almost 10 years, along my journey I have met 5 amazing male educators. Males in our industry are important because children need positive male role models. I value the different opinions and skill sets that males can bring into the workplace. I don’t think it comes down to gender, it comes down to passion and commitment to ongoing learning and building reciprocal relationships.

I've worked in child care 23 years and never worked alongside a Male working with the children. I think that a male educator would be an amazing role model and benefit the service greatly. I'd love to see more male educators in the sector
