Scenario: Rhett - ABC Observation

Hi,
I just have stucked with the ABC observation regarding this following scenario. Here I don't know what to write for Antecedent which means what triggers Rhett to behave like that...
Thanks for your support.
Regards
Anu.

SCENARIO:
Rhett (4 years old) has been in your 3-5yr room which is licensed for 20 children for over two months.
Rhett is an only child. His parents have enrolled him in the service as they are fairly isolated and have no family nearby and want him to play with other children.
You have noticed since Rhett started at the service, the children are constantly calling out his name; he has either knocked over buildings they have created in the construction corner or pushed them out of the way to take what they are playing with. Several of the children have ended up crying and upset after being in contact with Rhett.
He never seems to find anything he would like to play with, spending only short periods of time at any one activity, usually drawing.
The staffs are constantly trying to solve problems between Rhett and the children and the only time he seems to have interaction with the educators is when they are redirecting his behaviour.
You notice in the last week that his behaviour has become even more aggressive than previous weeks. He seems to be just wandering around the room not even wanting to draw. One of the other educators in the room tells you she has also noticed these changes in his behavior.
You decide to organise a meeting with Rhett’s parents to talk about your concerns. When you approach his mother she gets very distressed and starts crying. She explains that Rhett’s father is very ill and has been in hospital for the last eight days. She is finding it difficult to cope with all the stress and has no support. She says “All we have done for the last week is drive back and forth to the hospital. I feel so bad because I haven’t been spending quality time with Rhett…all I seem to do is snap at him. I don’t know what to do!”

QUESTIONS
1. Identify the that are disruptive and behaviors that would behaviors concern you

Poor quality play that seems limited and repetitive - Rhett has threatening other children through knocked over buildings they have created or pushed them out of the way to take what they are playing with. So the other children’s were ended up with upset and crying
Significant changes in his feelings or behaviour - being more aggressive than past weeks.
Persistent separation difficulties or attachment problems with family – his father was sick and his mother has no time to spend a quality time with him. Instead she was slapping him.
Difficulty in paying attention, following instructions and completing tasks – Rhett doesn’t seems to interested in any of the play or activities except drawing for a short time. Now he doesn’t like to do that as well and just wandering around the room.

2. What factors do you believe are contributing to Rhett’s behavior

Rhett family is living in an isolated where there were no family livings near by. So he doesn’t have a chance to interact with other children. Hence the childcare setting is new to him and he is not feeling safe, secure and belonging.
Now his father is sick and his mother is busy with taking care of him. She has no support and no time to spend with Rhett. Also she feels stressed and get angry with him. Here Rhett’s only source of attachment and love is his father and mother. Now father is sick and mother has no time. So he feel disturbed so much and it leads to be more aggressive.
`
3. Record 3 observations and analyze Rhett’s behavior

• ABC narrative
ABC (Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequence) Chart Form
Date/Time Activity Antecedent Behaviour Consequence
Date/Time What activity was What happened right What the behaviour What happened after
when the behaviour going on when the before the behaviour that may looked like the behaviour,
occurred behaviour occurred have triggered the behaviour or as a result
of the behaviour

• Frequency Count
• Anecdotal
4. After the co-ordinator has met with the parents she decides to implement a positive behavior plan for Rhett, she asks you to assist her with positive guidance strategies to help Rhett with his behavior. List 3 strategies and explain how they will be implemented.
5. Who would be involved in developing and implementing this plan?
6. The co-ordinator has decided to review the plan in two weeks. Pretend that you have implemented one of your strategies and record Rhett’s response to the strategies as a learning story.
7. Explain how you might change the plan based on Rhett’s response.

Examples of antecedent events – fatigue, frustration with task, asked to put toys away during play, etc. For this scenario it could include: He never seems to find anything he would like to play with, spending only short periods of time at any one activity etc.

Here is some more information that may help:

Hope this helps,
