in a culture where
a sport such as a soccer is played
early and very competitively, a
parent’s assessment of a child’s
physical abilities may be linked
to performance on the soccer
field. But the basic patterns
of physical development in
children are universal.

Question 4
Question
The following factors may influence physical growth and development. For each factor give a short explanation and example.
Factor
Explanation
Example
Maturation-
Readiness:
Readiness is an important factor in physical development. For example, if a child has not yet developed the fine motor control and hand-eye co-ordination necessary to be able to manipulate scissors, no amount of practice will help the child to achieve this skill.

Heredity:
Body shape, size and growth rate are influenced by heredity. Children will look similar to their parents and experience similar growth rates to their parents
children who are by nature taller than other children who have similar age, have characteristics of one of both of his parents.

Prenatal development:
The health and well-being of a mother during pregnancy can be directly linked to a child’s physical growth. .
pregnant women who smoke heavily, abuse alcohol, have a poor diet, drink excessive caffeine or are drug abusers are more likely to give birth to an infant with a low birth weight. Later development is also affected and children often have poor fine motor and co-ordination skills than their same age peer
Diet:
Diet influences individual growth rates as well as the growth rates of whole populations.
children living in extreme poverty are likely to have reduced growth rates. They are also less likely to engage in active play due to a lack of energy, which in turn will influence other areas of development
