Information Sheet for Child Care Educator’s

Please prepare an Information Sheet for Child Care Educators about the Indigenous Australian culture regarding cultural safety and the things to be aware of when working with children and families from this cultural background. The Information Sheet should include information about:
a) The presence of people from this culture in Australia
b) Food and dietary issues, common intolerances or information which is specific to people of this cultural group;
c) Gender and family roles within this culture;
d) Social norms within this culture;
e) Strategies for how a learning environment can connect to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander culture.
f) Places to find further information about this culture;
g) Helpful communication strategies;
h) benefits of diversity to the service
i) Resources available to support cultural diversity in the service;
j) How to minimize discrimination against people from this culture in the school, or workplace.
k) Common health care issues pertaining to Indigenous Australians and methods of seeking health care support and assistance;
l) Access to, and use of Indigenous interpreters and relevant community members to help with misunderstandings and access to better education and how/where an Indigenous mentor could be acquired from the local community;
m) Information about historical issues, legislation and government policy which have contributed to the difficulties faced by Indigenous Australians;
n) Resources available to help Indigenous Australian students to access education and further support, when needed;

When compiling this information sheet, please ensure that:
a. You use culturally sensitive language and present your information with respect;
b. Use your own words when possible. You’re welcome to include information sheets or fact sheets from the internet, but it’s expected that your own language be used to inform the reader;
c. Be careful with the sources of the information you use. There is a lot of incorrect and inappropriate information available on the internet;
d. Keep your Information Sheet brief. It wouldn’t be expected to be any longer than 2-3 pages in length.
e. You’re welcome to include images, photos and graphics to present your information sheet.
