Your Question?
1. What efforts are being made in Australia to meet various cultural practices that are relatively new for our society?

2. Sometimes it may be better to ask for a cultural interpreter. When might this be the case?

3. If a colleague disclosed to you that they believe a client was not ‘normal’ because of their cultural beliefs, how would you respond?


What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
I've just answered the questions here with the general aspect of what I think as i'm not 100% about my answers yet..

1. would this would be things like Harmony Day/week?

2. I would probably say depending on the first meet the descision would be made from there. Each case is different, and needs to be assessed accordingly.

3. I myself would probably take it straight to the attention of my supervisor as this isn't something that should be messed around with.


Description and Message:
Hey guys,

This is my last module before completing my cert 3! I've worked in child care for a few years and started studying via correspondence, but I recently moved interstate and have lost my support system.. i'm having so much trouble with this module and not being able to talk to my supervisor about my concerns.. I've put up the 3 main questions i'm having issues with at this point in time, and a rough example of how i'd answer them. I'm not looking for an answer, just a nudge in the right direction if i'm off course, or a suggestion if im missing out on something.

2: See if this helps - A "cultural interpreter" is an active participant in a cross-cultural/lingual interaction, assisting the provider in understanding the beliefs and practices of the client's culture and assisting the client in understanding the dominant culture, by providing cultural as well as linguistic links. This model of interpreting service was developed out of an awareness that communication is seriously impaired by insensitivity to the role of culture in the content and manner of communication, particularly in formal interactions.

So based on this information, when will the need for a cultural interpreter may arise?

3: Yes, going to your supervisor is one way to go, however many people believe others may be not "normal" for their cultural beliefs because they themselves have little or no information about it. I would gather some information about this clients cultural beliefs and inform that particular staff member to make them understand why the clients culture is important.
