The question is to do with the risks associated with nappy changing in infants and toddlers and when it comes to Side changing- the pressure on staff/care provider bodies.

What is side changing?

Also, what nappy changing resources are available for a larger child or a preschool aged child with additional needs? How do you ensure the safety of yourself and the child as well as respecting the rights of the child eg: the child's privacy and dignity?

Side changing is when you are changing the child standing on their side rather than having them lying lengthwise with their feet facing you.
Risks - Lack of maneuverability, takes longer, risk of the child rolling sideways off the table, puts pressure on one side of the carer's hips/back.

For larger children - Slide out stairs makes it safer for carer and child, as it's unsafe to lift a child over 25kg. If the child is less than 25kg and slide out stairs aren't available, bending your knees and lifting the child under the armpits without bending or twisting is the safest lifting procedure.
To protect the child's privacy, ensure that you have all the materials needed to make the nappy change as quick as possible. Talking to the child in a normal voice and not belittling them for 'still' wearing a nappy or having accidents respects the child's dignity
