Question:

ANSWERS:

EBM should be stored in a sterile single use container, once used containers should be discarded.

- Each container must be labelled with infants name, time and date of collection or time date of thawing, any additives ( human milk fortifier)

Freshly expressed breastmilk should be put into a clean, closed container or sealable plastic bag that is not into the same container previously refrigerated or frozen milk.Store breastmilk in
- at temperature (26C or lower) for 6-8 hrd
-in the fridge (4 C or lower ) for up to 72 hrs - best spot is the back of refrigerator where itd coldest.
- in the freezer section of fridge with separate door for 3 months
-in the deep freeze ( 18C or lower) for 6-12 months.

Previously frozen breastmilk ( thawed in the fridge but not warmed) storr breastmilk:
- at room temperature (26C or lower ) for 4hrs or less- that is until the bext feed.
- in the fridge for up to 24 hrs ( best spot back of refrigerator where its coldest)

Breastmilk thawedoutside fridge in warm water,you can store breastmilk;
- at the room temperature (26C or lower) until the end of the feed
- in the fridge or 4 hrs or until the next feed.
-do not freeze previously frozen milk.

Heating expressed milk
- warm container of breastmilk by placing it in warm water, if your using frozen breastmilk, you can thaw it by placing it in either cool or warm water.
- don't use a microwave oven to thaw or warm milk because it destroys some of tge component of breastmilk.
- always shake the bottle or container gently, and test temperature of the milk before feeding the baby.

When infant is to receive EBM
- label with infants name should be attached to the bottle
- EBM removed from the fridge and the following should be checked: date and time of collection,if it exceeds 48hrs then the milk should be discarded and not used, the name of the baby should corespond to the sticker.
- bottle with the feed is taken to the baby and 2 staff check the name of the bottle correspond to the baby.

All equipment such as bottles, bowls and other equipment should be thoroughly washed.Thoroughly wash equipment with warm water, rinse well and air-dry parts with clean paper towel.Store covered until next use.
