Your Assignment Module Number and Heading: Identify and respond to young people at risk
Your Assignment Type: Case Scenario
Currently Working in Childcare? Yes
Your knowledge: Beginner

Your Question?
Adin (5 years) has just hit Ethan (3 years) his younger brother. When staff approached, Adin said that Ethan was "naughty" and it is his job to make sure Ethan behaves himself.

What could you do?
Who could you seek advice and support from?
How can you protect Ethan and still respect Adin's family beliefs?
Should this matter be reported? If so to whom and why?

What is your answer so far or What have you done so far as an attempt to solve this question?
I havent dealt with this topic before so I am stuck on what to do. I would approach Adin and tell him that we do not do this at care. It can only be a 'home' thing.

Hitting should not be a ‘home thing’ or ‘daycare thing’
he should be told clearly that hitting is unacceptable and if his brother was doing something he did not think was right (avoid use of word naughty altogether) then he needs to speak to his brother or get a teacher and tell them so they can speak to him about it.

You can get support from other staff members and also speak to the family and say recommend that Adin is not encouraged to hit in order to get his brother to do the right thing and that perhaps they should encourage him to ‘use his words’ instead.

I would not report the matter to anyone unless it continued or seemed to be something that parents insisted that was ok and he should continue doing
