Question:
Activity 5: Duty of care requirements
For this task, you are required to read through the scenario below, and then access the service’s policy in regards to duty of care, to answer the questions that follow.
Scenario:
You are an educator working for Cherry Tree Lane Early Learning Centre. One morning you are supervising some children in the outdoor play area. You are the only educator outside, but there are three other educators supervising children inside the service.
There are five children playing in a sandpit and one child wants to go to the toilet.
List the actions you would need to take to exercise your duty of care to all five children. Make reference to the actual policy referred to, and how you would meet its guiding principles.

Answer:
Am I required to take all 5 children inside with me? Or am I able to let the one child who needs to use the bathroom to go inside by himself as there are other educators inside?
I actually wouldn't have a clue what to do in this situation. Doesn't it depend on the age of the children?

OK I just thought about this more. I should take all children with me inside and ask another educator to assist by taking the boy to the bathroom and then returning him to us while I resumed play outside with the children.

Normally the indoor-outdoor are next to each other. So I just call one of the ladies inside tell her one boy needs to go to the toilet and I stay with the 4 boys outside. that happened many times in my workplacement and they managed in that way.

Policy:
health and safety -supervision ratios
