1. First stage (birth to 5-6). during this stage infants are particularly responsive to their mothers. this ids preferences for their mother continues as attachment process develops. Babies at this stage discriminate less between adults so long as their needs met in responsive, caring way.

2. second stage(5 to 11 months) During this stage infants shoe definite preference for familiar people mother or frequent carer. Fear of being separated from the primary caregiver is common about 8 months of age.

1) Typical behaviour-Infants at this stage show of being upset, crying, whimpering when their mother is out of sight.
How the carer can support separation
- carer should respond quickly when baby display sign of separation anxiety.
-Carer can settle the baby by providing physically comforting them with hug or rub on the back.
