Oobleck

Oobleck is a fascinating non-Newtonian fluid that behaves like both a liquid and a solid, depending on how you handle it. The following article provides a recipe of oobleck.

Oobleck is named after a substance from the Dr. Seuss book "Bartholomew and the Oobleck." This simple mixture of cornstarch and water is a fantastic sensory play activity for children.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of cornstarch

  • 1/2 cup of water

  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Mix Ingredients: In a bowl, combine 1 cup of cornstarch with 1/2 cup of water.

  2. Add Color (Optional): If you want colored oobleck, add a few drops of food coloring to the water before mixing it with the cornstarch.

  3. Stir: Use your hands or a spoon to mix the ingredients until they form a smooth, gooey consistency. You’ll notice that the mixture behaves like a liquid when poured slowly but becomes solid when you apply pressure.

Playing with Oobleck

  • Experiment: Squeeze the oobleck in your hand to feel it solidify, then release it to see it flow like a liquid.

  • Sensory Play: Encourage children to explore the texture and properties of oobleck with their hands.

Cleaning Up

  • Oobleck is easy to clean up with warm water. It can be dissolved and washed away from surfaces and hands.

Oobleck is a great way to introduce children to basic scientific concepts while engaging in fun and messy play.
