Salty Art Larry Hoffman

Use simple kitchen ingredient 'Table Salt' as part of your Art n Craft experience. Add water colour or food colouring to the salt to create a new medium for children to experience and paint with or to create a work of art.

Materials Needed:

  • Salt (table salt)
  • White glue
  • Water colour paints OR food colouring mixed with water
  • Bowls or jars for each colour if using food colouring mixed in water
  • Paint brush (one for each colour)
  • Coloured thick paper (black works best)
  • Tray (to create art work on)

What to do:

  • On the coloured piece of paper, using the glue the child can create a picture. It can be shapes, letters, squiggly lines etc.
  • Before the glue dries, pour salt over the gluey image that has been created. A lot of salt can be used here.
  • Shake off excess salt (keep it for another “salty art work”.
  • Dip paint brush into the water colour and sprinkle it onto the salt. As the water colour hits the salt the paint will begin to spread along the salt. (you don’t need to paint over the salt just dip and sprinkle the water colour over the top of the salt)
  • Use lots of different colours.
  • Hang to dry,
  • Salt will crystallize and sparkle.

Hints and Tips:

  • Buy some cheap frames, add the salty art and hang them in the hallway.
  • If you don’t want to draw, print out a picture and use the glue to trace along the image to get the same picture.
  • You can use Colouring Pages available under Printables in this website.
