ASSIGNMENT 1 – CASE STUDY

Imagine are a qualified educator in either a long day care service or outside school hours care service. A new family has come to the service to enrol their child. The child’s family have migrated to Australia in the past two years from India.

1. What information will be given to the family upon enrolment?
The information will be given to the family upon enrolment are:
The qualified staff member will show them around the centre and let them how the centre work:
Time open and closed
How much the fees are:
How the program work, linked to the EYLF and the children portfolio
What they bring when their child start such as nappies, hat, water bottle, spare clothes/shoes, bed and cot sheets, etc.
Show them the eat/sleep daily chart
Where they sign their child in/out
Where their child’s pocket at with their name on it
Show them that each child’s name on the locker

The centre booklet will be translated in different language so the parents/guardian will understand how the centre works.
Different cultural language words around the centre.
Orientation day or visit

3. Indicate the process you would take to gather information about the child’s needs, interests, preferences and routines.

The enrolment form we provide for the parents to gather as much information about their child’s needs, interests, preferences and routines.
We provide them with the ‘Routine Form’ for the parent’s so we can make it easy for the child to stay in the same routine as home.

4. How would you ascertain family practises in relation to care giving and important key family events?

I would ascertain family practises in relation to care giving and important key family events are:

5. What opportunities are there to exchange information on an ongoing basis with the parents after the enrolment process?
To exchange information on an ongoing basis with the parents after the enrolment process are:
The room communication book
Staff member interaction with the parents
Update information form (monthly)

6. What communication strategies would you use? Why would these be appropriate to this family?

Open communication – It's so important for you to be having an open communication with parents about their children's developmental needs. Parents have a right to know what is happening with their child so if you have any behavioral issues or concerns with a child, talk to their parents. At times, it may seem like parents don't take the time to communicate with us. However it's our responsibility to build up the lines of communication. This can include: newsletters, personalized notes, child communication books, questionnaires, surveys, suggestion boxes etc.

Create a room notice board - This will allow you to share experiences and messages with families on a daily basis. You can add the weekly program, daily photos, children's birthdays, child / parent input of the program, newsletters and any messages or important information that you can share with the families at the centre. Just remember that all families will see this, so only provide general information that will benefit all families.

7. What would you do to establish a positive relationship with the child’s family?

Create a welcoming atmosphere – It's important to allow family members to participate freely in the center's activities. Invite family members to ask questions and to explore the centre. You can provide explanations about the activities and how they link to the program. Show the family member different projects that their child has participated in and any displays such as art that the child may have worked on.
Interact with the family during the centre events such as Easter concert, Christmas concert, Australia day etc.

8. What would you do to encourage the family to share their knowledge, skills, expertise and aspects of their family life and culture?
The service would encourage the family to share their knowledge, skills, expertise and aspects of the family life and culture by:
Celebrate their cultural day like celebrate the Diwali Day
Christmas Party – bring their cultural food
Family involve with the centre for example: Cooking play how they cook their food, reading storybook about their cultural and the way of life.

9. Describe how you would create opportunities for families to contribute to the operation of the service in an advisory, consultative or decision-making role?

ASSESSMENT 2 – RESEARCH TASK

Complete the following research task. You may need to access the Internet or local community information.

1. How can educators be involved in promoting parent support networks and the value of parenting? Please identify 3 detailed strategies that would support positive parenting in your service.

• Parenting communication book
• Parent’s notice board for the important and value information for guardians or parents.
• Newsletter every month (centre)

2. Research at least one external organisation in your community that can assist with, or be incorporated in, the positive parenting information in your service.
Develop an information flyer or brochure based on the organisation you have researched and ensure you detail what they do and how they can support families in your service. Please ensure the contact details are included so families can easily access the service.

3. Explain how you will ensure that the information that you are providing to families is current and remain current.
• Update the parents information
• Newsletter every month
• Notice board
• Communicator with the parents by talking to them

ASSESSMENT 3 – SIMULATION/ROLE PLAY

Read through the following scenario. You will be conducting a role play/simulation. Ensure that you address all the questions and tasks included.

Imagine that you will need to set up an interview with Noeleen to discuss Callum’s behaviour and Susan the mother of the child who has been bitten. You may choose to simulate this scenario with another educator.

1. Describe the physical setting for each interview and how you have gone about setting up the environment to ensure it is warm and welcoming and an atmosphere to encourage open communication.
2. Discuss the reasons why you need the interviews and how you organized the interviews. (i.e. the aim)
3. Explain what you would like to achieve from the interview with the parents and the opportunities you will provide the family to input into the discussion and assist in developing strategies.
4. Prepare and submit the interview questions for each interview

Hi Tracie,

Here are a few more points that can be added:
What information will be given to the family upon enrolment?

You could also include a form of any special food requirements that you may need to be aware of. Since the family are from India they maybe vegetarian. If so, you will need to accommodate this during all meals.
As English is their second language how will you ensure that the family understand the information provided to them?

Give them a copy of all the information which they can take home and read at their own pace. Give them an opportunity to ask question or share their concerns if they are not clear on any matters.
Indicate the process you would take to gather information about the child’s needs, interests, preferences and routines.

Talk to the family about their child’s interests, what they do on the weekend, talk to the child themselves etc.
How would you ascertain family practises in relation to care giving and important key family events?

Talk to the family about important family events and also do you own research into the different cultural events the family may celebrate. Talk to the family about what you have researched and confirm family events celebrated.
Describe how you would create opportunities for families to contribute to the operation of the service in an advisory, consultative or decision-making role?

Through surveys, questionnaires, feedback forms etc.

Assessment Task 2

2 – You need to find an organisation in your area that has something to do with parenting etc.

Explain how you will ensure that the information that you are providing to families is current and remain current.

Subscribe to parenting networks and government sites (Centrelink etc) on the internet to get notifications on if there are any changes or updates you need to be aware of and this can be passed onto the parents.

Assessment Task 3

Tips For Talking With Parents
Talking With parents About Their Child's Behaviour
Talking To Parents When Concerns Arise

Hope these help,

You may need to search each point of information one by one... You can find information on the ACECQA website and within the National Regulations.

Give them options so the child can particpate such as

- the child wearing an art smock
- changing the child into other clothes for the experience
- change the activity for the child to particpate in so they don't get dirty such as adding paper into a ziplock bag and paint into the paint and the child squishes the paint onto the paper.
