minimal qualification

Hi,

I am wondering if any childcare professionals can help me. My older sister has worked in the childcare industry in Singapore for the last 7 years. She has a basic qualification in children's services. She is looking for a childcare job in QLD, South/ Logan area.

My question is, with the experience that she has and minimal qualifications, what is her chances of getting a job as a childcare assistant?

She is willing to do her diploma once she gets a full time job.

Thanks in advance
Syakira

I’d say unless her qualification matches up to a min Cert III level she would have to start off as unqualified and do her Cert III or Diploma when she gets here.

Hi Syakira,

I did some research for you and you can actually get your sister’s overseas qualification assessed through ACECQA to see whether or not your sister is able to work as a childcare assistant with the qualification she has gained in Singapore.

You will have to apply and once the qualification is assessed and application is successful then your sister is able to work in the childcare industry with the qualification she has already received. If her qualification doesn’t match up to the same recognition here in Australia, well then she will have to either do a certificate 3 course or a traineeship to become a childcare assistant and then continue on to her diploma.

I’m adding the information below from the ACECQA website, as well as the link where you can find the documents, application form and further information.

How can my overseas qualification be recognised for early childhood teaching in Australia?

ACECQA is responsible for assessing early childhood qualifications for the purposes of working in early childhood education and care services under the National Quality Framework (NQF). ACECQA does not publish a list of overseas early childhood teaching qualifications under the NQF.

If you wish to be recognised as an early childhood teacher in an education and care service, you may apply to ACECQA to have your qualifications assessed for equivalence. Details of the process and requirements to have your overseas qualifications assessed for equivalence can be found here. Please refer to the Guidelines for Assessment and Determination of Equivalent Qualifications and the Qualification Assessment Application Form.

As your qualifications were awarded overseas, you will need to provide evidence to ACECQA of the qualification level against the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF). You can obtain this assessment from either the Overseas Qualification Unitin your state/territory or AEI-NOOSR.

ACECQA will also accept evidence of current teacher registration in an Australian State/Territory as evidence of qualification levelling.

Hopefully this gives you a little help on what to do next,

Hi,

Thanks LA for your help. I've already told my sister and she wants to study and work at the same time.

Hello Community,

The following list outlines the official recommendations that have been made in relation to the necessary qualification requirements for those working in a child care service. The Child Care Regulations 2006 require that a minimum of 50% of staff in a service have a qualification appropriate to the care and development of children. The Early Childhood Care and Education Scheme states that from June 2012 the Play Leader in each room of a service must have a minimum qualification of a FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Childcare. Employers generally look for a minimum of FETAC Level 5 or equivalent, relevant to the specific job role and responsibilities.

Thanks and Regards,
