Hi Nick! Those are some great questions that I tried researching myself several months ago. The entire process involves a lot of applications and paperwork, but the website of the Department of Education & Communities FAQs helped me heaps as a starting point. That page covers supervisor certificates, service approvals, the use of learning frameworks, getting assessed, and links to loads of other helpful resources.

In terms of child care centre VS family day care, that would depend heavily on where your location. How many centre-based facilities and family day cares are there? How are they rated? How long is the waiting list? How big is the neighborhood? These questions should help you find out which one is more in demand.

If you want to check the requirements (like the max # of children you can handle and what your venue should have) to launch your own home-based day care, check out this short article, How to Start Your Own Family Day Care. That's not a complete guide though so you'll still have to read up on the local requirements in NSW :)

Yes it is, but you definitely don't have to use them. I only shared it because it gave a breakdown of what you have to do when starting a child care centre (getting licensed, getting qualified educators to apply the framework, ensuring your facility complies with WHS/OHS regulations, etc). Sorry that I can't give a step by step guide right now (maybe give me a month or two to put one together).

I found an old post here with your same question. Seems like a guide is really needed. The information is out there but it's not all in one place (I hope I'm wrong).

Anyways, I would start with looking at the NSW education department website I linked to originally and ACEQCA's page on applications just to be aware of the road ahead.

Hi Nick,

Welcome to Aussie Childcare Network!

Starting your own childcare business is quite challenging as there are a lot of requirements required such as having liability insurance, getting service and provider approval, making sure you have the correct safety measures in place etc. It does make a difference whether you want to open up an Family Day Care or Long Day Care centre.

I recently written an article on starting you on childcare business. It will provide you with a brief overview as well as give you the necessary links on where to find the correct information.

Also when viewing attachments you need to be logged in to do so...

Hope this helps,

Hi Nick,

Can you try these please and let me know so I can help you troubleshoot this:

1) Were you logged in when you tried to download the attachment?

2) What browser are you using? Is it Google Chrome? What browser version is it?

3) Can you download from another browser like Firefox?

4) Are you able to give me a screenshot if the problem happens in other browser too?

Cheers,
Lorina.

Good to hear you were able to download it!

It's really hard to say "which area" to open a centre. You would really need to do some research as to find a suburb which is in need of childcare... You're from Sydney so how far are you willing to travel? Could you do something rural?

The following link is a directory of childcare centres in Australia. You can use the "quick search" to type in a suburb to get an idea on how many centres are currently available in and around that suburb. For example for Parramatta, NSW there are over 30 centres so opening a centre in that area may be a challenge...
