Am I too old??

I've never worked in childcare, but I have been considering a masters in teaching in early childhood which I believe would qualify me to work in daycare centres and preschools. I'm predominately interested in working in a preschool. The thing is I'm 43 and my youngest is only 22 months. I think I could finish the masters the year she starts school but that would mean starting out at around 47/8. Is this too old? Is this an ageist industry?? Personally I would prefer my children were cared for more mature teachers but the few experiences i have with daycares the staff were always really young. I guess I just don't know how to find out what it would really be like trying to find a job in cc at nearly 50!!

Good on you! I really believe that we need more mature educators working in childcare as it does seem like the younger generation seem to like working with children as well.

Having an educator who has their own children and has experience in dealing with children really helps because even though the setting may be different it is similar to your own children.

I don't believe age is a factor especially if you are going to get your masters in teaching that would put you over the edge of other candidates.

Hi Lynster,
go for it. Please do not worrie about age. The doors are never shut not even for us more mature ladies.
I have child care experience with school aged children with appropriate qualifications (OSH) but haven't worked with kids for 10 years. (Health reasons)
My kids are adults and I have 2 grandchildren aged 2.5 and 4.5.
Started the Cert 3 in Early Education 3 weeks ago and I'm 54 and a grandma hahaha. Lets do it..... it's lots of fun and I do believe that passion for children will shine through when it comes to getting a job down the track.

Age does not matter, if you want to do something good go for it.

Here are some requirements:

Educational Requirements

A high school degree or equivalent generally is needed to become a daycare teacher. Usually a bachelor's or associate's degree in early childhood development is not required. However, a degree will help if one is looking toward future advancement within a daycare facility or preschool.

I've been in childcare for 18 years but didn't do my Diploma till 2 years ago at the age of 51, so go for it.
I do believe the tables are turning and people are seeing and appreciating the value of age and experience.
