what about this little cute song it is sang to the tune of row, row, row your boat.

“Pass,pass,pass the color,
This is the game we play!
When this little song is through,
This color’s name we’ll say

This song is great to help teach children colours, the idea is to use a crayon or other object of a certain colour and have the children sitting in a circle passing the coloured item around as each child gets the item they say the colour whiles singing the above song.

you could also use this song

this song is great for teaching active listening skills as well as shapes.

You could also do the days of the week song sung to twinkle twinkle little star

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday too.
Wednesday, Thursday just for you.
Friday, Saturday that’s the end.
Now let’s say those days again!
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday!

Lastly you could use this counting song

You mentioned that the centre you're doing prac at uses stories and songs for academic purposes this means that the songs and stories chosen during group time is based on a concept such as counting, numbers, seasons, animals, planets, colours, etc.

You could let us know the songs, stories you have planned so we can let you know if they are suitable...

This may also help:
